OUR HISTORY

  • Bakeries at 32 East Tce - Loxton
  • After 14 years of Baking from Martha Street, Paul King bought and demolished the Avalon Theatre to create a major wholesale bakery to supply the Riverland with freshly baked goods. The Theatre was demolished, and King’s Bakery was established in 1964. The following year (1965) saw the bakery officially opened and so began the legacy of the bakery in its current location.

Paul continued to bake until he sold the bakery to Max and Jan Glatz in 1977. The Bakery undertook a name change and was then called Hi-Krust Bakery. Hi-Krust Bakery continued in the path of King’s Bakery until 1988.

In 1989 Hi-Kust Bakery together with Winzen’s Bakery (Berri) saw an opportunity to monopolise the Riverland and joined forces to create Sunbake Bakery. This was only a short venture as Sunbake sold out and moved their operation to Berri in 1992.

A new year began and in 1993, Wes and Pam Linke took the reigns and renamed the business to Loxton Bakery. This was a dark time for the bakery as it slowly died a slow death and in 1995 saw the closure of the bakery.

  • The Country Bakehouse
  • In 1996 The Country Bakehouse moved from Edward Street into the building and commenced a long tradition of baking not seen since Paul King started back in 1965. The Country Bakehouse is currently the longest standing Bakery in the township of Loxton.

The Country Bakehouse commenced trading in November 1986 with owners Tim & Caryn Zimmerman, in a single shop located in Edward Street Loxton. It was necessary to expand within 3 years, spreading the retail operation into the shop next door and the production area taking up the entire original shop.

Continued growth necessitated further expansion, with the entire operation relocating to East Terrace in November 1996. This new site has enabled The Country Bakehouse to capitalise on main street exposure, as well as having a much larger production area for more efficient operation.

  • Current Generation
  • In May 2005, The Country Bakehouse was sold to Tim & Julie Vivian, but during November 2005 it was again necessary to look at the needs of the community and it was decided to expand again into the shop next door formally known as Annabelle’s Jewelers. This allowed for more seating creating a bigger, brighter shop area with a capacity of 74 people both inside and out.

September 2019 saw the shop receive a total makeover from the ceiling to the floors and everything in between. This renovation has given the bakery a modern industrial look which also includes a new look logo.

The Country Bakehouse currently employs 28 people and trades from 7.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday and 7.00am – 1.00pm Saturdays.
